Collector’s Edition

This is pretty random… but i guess that is what a blog is for. As I strolled thru the local Best Buy, hoping to burn up my christmas gift cards but only seeing stuff I can’t afford, I realized something that I thought was funny. Collectors edition DVDs. Are there actual DVD collectors out there snatching up ‘collectors edition’, ‘limited edition’, ‘directors cut’ versions of DVDs in hopes of making a profit sometime in the future? Is there some type of DVD trading card store in which people will trade a mint condition Seabiscuit and Caddyshack for a unrated American Pie 2 DVD? Or are people just wasting money to get DVD feature they’ll probably never use like deleted scenes (usually done for a reason), commentary (if you want in movie commentary, just go to the midway theatre), theatrical trailer (sweet… a condensed version of the movie you just watched).I believe these are all valid rhetorical questions.
I think people do this so they can show they are the ‘ultimate’ fan of something. I did this for the lord of the rings movies. I now regret this as I spent over 30 dollars per movie… and because its the ‘collectors edition’ i must block off an entire saturday just to watch one movie as they are like 8 hours long. Now that I’ve talked about this… I’ll have to talk about blue ray and HD-DVD another time… damn it.

P.S. Nate: Dragon Wars is now out on DVD (collector’s Edition available)
